STOCKTON, CALIF. - On Wednesday, May 4th, the Sonoma State women's golf team saw their final action of the 2021-22 season as seniors
Samantha Cabunag and
Lexi Nielsen qualified for individual play in the 2022 NCAA West Regional. Both golfers were the program's first NCAA individual participants since Megan DaLeo represented SSU in 2019.
Samantha Cabunag came in as the low finisher for the Seawolves placing t-38th at 13-over par. After the entire field struggled on day one of the regional, Cabunag combined for +5 in her final two rounds and recorded four birdies. After teeing off on the back nine in her second round, Cabunag would bounce back after a 5-over 9-hole stretch and record three birdies on the front nine to finish 2-under on the front and record a 75 (+3) overall. Cabunag would have a solid final round record a birdie and 15 par's to finish with a 74 (+2).
Fellow senior
Lexi Nielsen would kick things off with a solid 76 (+4) after going even par through her first 9 holes. Nielsen would finish her three rounds with a combined four birdies and placed t-56th at 18-over. Despite neither golfer placing high enough to advance on to nationals, their SSU careers came to a fitting close as they were able to represent their team in the west regional.
Nielsen was one of the most talented golfers on the Seawolves roster this season as she was able to tie her own school record for individual low round in a tournament at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. There, Nielsen would record a second round 66 (-6) and finish in the top-3 for her best finish of the season. Nielsen recorded a 66 (-6) at SSU's very own Spring Invite last spring to first break the program record. Cabunag consistently finished inside the top-20 throughout the entire year and even placed inside the top-5 in three different tournaments this spring. Her best finish came at the CCAA Tournament two weeks ago where she recorded back-to-back 1-over rounds to finish t-3rd individually and lead the Seawolves to a 5th place team finish.
Congratulations to the Sonoma State women's golf team on a terrific 2021-22 campaign and congratulations to seniors
Samantha Cabunag,
Lexi Nielsen, and
Natalie Brugler on fantastic SSU careers. The Seawolves will return to competition in the fall of 2022 as they prepare for their NCAA countable season in the spring of 2023. All results from this season can be found
