MGOLF: Seawolves Place 13th at NCAA Regionals after Lowest Score in Field in Third Round

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Sonoma State men's golf team made a major move up the standings with the best final round in the entire field at the NCAA Regionals on Saturday.  The Seawolves shot an eight-under-par 276 after opening the tournament with a 300 and 285 on the first two days. 
 
The NCAA Regional held at Pueblo CC in Pueblo, Colorado featured the top-20 teams in the West and South Central regions.  The format featured 18 holes each on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the top-4 teams and two-individuals advancing.
 
Sonoma State started slow in the tournament, closing out the first round with the highest score in the field.  Griffin Pace and Jack Greene but shot three-over-par 74s with Aidan Oliver and Nick Friedman adding 76s to round out the scoring.  Greene had a very impressive run on the front nine, birdieing four of the final five holes.  His four birdies were a team high with Tom Jenkins adding three. 
 
The Seawolves started making their move up the standings in the second round, finishing one-over-par as team with a 285.  The score pushed SSU ahead of Simon Fraser and Hawaii Pacific and into 18th. Pace once again finished with the best round on the team, shooting a two-under-par 69.  Oliver also improved by five strokes, shooting an even-par 71 while Jenkins added a 72 and Green a 73.  The birdies were also much more plentiful in the second round with Pace, Greene and Jenkins finishing with four apiece.  Oliver added three and an eagle while Friedman tacked on two and an eagle of his own.
 
Sonoma State shined in Saturday's final round, posting the best score of the day with an eight-under-par 276.  The score was two strokes better than the next closest team and vaulted the Seawolves five spots in the standings.  Pace meanwhile caught fire on the back nine, birdieing four straight holes to finish with a round of 67.  His four-under-par moved him all the way up to 11th place overall, the fourth best of any CCAA golfer in the field.  The low round of the day for SSU belong to Greene who finished with a five-under-par 66. Jenkins also shot his best round of the tournament on the final day, hitting even-par while Freidman rounded out the scoring with a 72. 
 
Pace finished the round with six birdies and an eagle to give him twelve for the tournament, one behind Greene who had 13.  Greene tallied five birdies and an eagle on the final day to give him at least four birdies in each round.  He also broke the top-30 individually, finishing in a tie for 27th overall.
