DAVIS, CALIF. - On Friday, March 10th, the Sonoma State women's track & field team finally saw their first action of the 2023 season as the team's throwers competed in the Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis. The meet would escape a significant rain storm on Friday afternoon and allow for the hammer throw event to take place with four Seawolves in action.
The day would be highlighted with a 9th place finish from freshman
Lily Garcia who would also compete in her first event as a Seawolf. The Fresno native recorded one of the best marks in program history with a hammer throw of 42.35 meters, good for 4th overall. Garcia would lead SSU with a 9th place finish out of 18 throwers in the event.
Right behind Garcia would be second year thrower
Emma Lopez would finish in 10th place with an impressive mark of 41.30 meters. Lopez recorded a season best throw of just under 40 meters at the CCAA Championships last season and would easily surpass that mark today.
Additional freshmen in
Kyra Togni and
Halle McDaniels would round out the group with a 13th and 15th place finish. Togni finished with a mark of 40.61 meters while McDaniels recorded a mark of 39.46 meters. Togni would conclude the day as one of three Seawolves with a mark of at least 40 meters to represent a solid day for Sonoma State.
A pair of top-10 finishes and a top-5 program mark in the hammer throw highlight the day in the Seawolves first event of the spring season. They will turn right back around and compete in the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Pac-12 member Stanford. The meet will kickoff on Saturday, March 18th and live results and additional meet information can found at sonomaseawolves.com.
