PUEBLO, COL. - On Monday, March 20th, the Sonoma State women's golf team wrapped up their 4th event of the 2023 spring season with a solid 6th place finish, good for their second best team finish this spring. Second year member
Lauren Garcia would lead the way for SSU as she recorded the best first round score of 1-under-par out of the 77 player field on Sunday. She would finish the two-day event in a tie for 9th place, good for her second top-10 individual finish of her career.
FIRST ROUND 309 (+21):
On day one for Sonoma State, Garcia would tally a team high four birdies and finish 1-under in her final five holes after a birdie on the par 3 8th. She would stand at the top of the individual leaderboard at the conclusion of her round.
After earning her first career CCAA Golfer of the Week award at the Fujikura Invitational earlier this month, freshman
Mia Golovich would tally three birdies and finish the first round as the team's next best finisher at 6-over-par. The Seawolves would find themselves in 7th place after day one of the Pack Classic.
SECOND ROUND 302 (+14):
On Monday, SSU would have a much better team round and shave off 7 strokes to jump as high as 5th place on the leaderboard. Three of the counting four scores would be 4-over or better, including a solid 73 (+1) from senior
Samantha Smedshammer. The Modesto native would finish with a career low round of 1-over-par recording a team high five birdies on the day. Smedshammer would jump all the way inside the top-30 of the individual leaderboard.
Golovich would add another four birdies in her second round to finish with a 75 (+3), her low round of the tournament.
Courtney Cervellin and
Lauren Garcia would round out the scoring for the Seawolves as they would climb a spot in the final round, and finish alone in 6th place out of 15 teams.
All four counting players for Sonoma State finished inside the top-30 as the team put together a respectable second round. Garcia would represent the team's lone top-10 finisher while Golovich, Smedshammer and Cervellin all finished inside the top-30.
The Seawolves will look to build off their momentum after their second best finish of the spring season and conclude their 2023 campaign with their annual SSU Women's Spring Invite on Monday, April 3rd. Live scoring links and tournament information can be found at sonomaseawolves.com.
