MBB: Wells Caps off Historic Season with Program's Second Ever All-American Selection

ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Monday, March 20th, the 2022-23 D2CCA All-America teams were announced with Sonoma State men's basketball star Jaylen Wells earning a spot on the All-America Third Team, representing the second All-American selection in program history. The awards seem endless for Wells after completing one of the most successful offensive seasons in program history, leading the league in scoring (22.4), tied for first in rebounds (8.7), first in minutes (36.8), and fourth in field goal percentage as he shot the ball at an efficient clip of 52%. Wells would lead his team in points, rebounds, steals, FG%, FT%, and minutes played as he became just the second player in program history to be named CCAA Player of the Year.

Earlier this month, Wells was named to the D2CCA All-West Region First Team, the program's first all-region selection since 2012. He would represent one of just two CCAA players selected to the All-America teams along with San Bernardino guard Brandon Knapper who earned Honorable Mention status.

Wells concludes his historic 2022-23 campaign after falling in the conference tournament semifinals back in February. He became the program's first 20-point scorer since 1990, finished first in single-season history in made free throws (174), second in FT% (86%), first in total minutes played (1,105), and second in points with 672, shy of the single-season record by just four points (Todd Blakely, 676).

Wells showed his growth from his freshman season as he jumped his three-point average by over 10% from 2021-22, finishing the season with a team best 44% from three, making him a versatile threat inside and out. He would also take home three conference Player of the Week awards this season, tying Hall of Famer J.T. Tipton for the most weekly awards in a single season (click here).

This is the second year the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association has sponsored the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball All-Region and All-American teams. The Division II CCA encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.

Congratulations to Sonoma State men's basketball player Jaylen Wells on a historic season and being named a 2022-23 D2CCA All-American, the second All-American selection in program history. Click HERE for the full 2022-23 D2CCA All-American teams.
