SAN MARCOS, CALIF. - The Sonoma State women's golf team traveled down to San Diego to participate in the CSU San Marcos Fujikura Invite. The tournament was played at Shadowridge Golf Club in San Marcos. Out of the stacked field, 9 out of the 15 teams in attendance were ranked in the top 50 of Golfstat rankings and the course played at 5993 yards. Although the field featured impressive talent, the course played extremely difficult and the average score amongst everyone in the tournament was 80.01 which equates to 8-over-par.
Although the Seawolves posted the second most birdies out of any team, they struggled and only had 76 pars throughout the tournament, which put them third to last place in the number of pars. Along with the lack of pars, they had 64 bogeys or worse which really affected their score.
The first round started with fireworks from freshman
Mia Golovich. She had a respectable front nine and shot two over and then turned it around and shot two-under-par on the back nine to finish at even par. Her fantastic score had her sitting in a tie for first place after the first round.
Courtney Cervellin was the only other player on the team to put up a round with no double bogeys. She finished with nine bogeys and one birdie to shoot 80 (+8).
Samantha Smedshammer also shot 80 (+8) but she had three doubles as well as three birdies.
Lauren Garcia Rounded out the group with a score of 84 and the women finished the first day with a round of 28-over-par. This score had them finish the first day in a tie for 5th place.
Day two was not the charge up the leaderboard that the women were looking for. With tougher pins and steady competition, they fell five spots to finish 10th out of the 15-team field. Golovich, who was playing close to her hometown of Temecula, once again led the team and shot one over and three over to finish her round at four-over-par. Her total score of four over for the tournament secured her first ever top-five finish by placing 3rd out of the 77-player field. Both Cervellin and Garcia shot eight over and
Talia Gutman rounded out the lineup with a round of nine over par. With a second-round score of 29-over-par SSU finished the tournament at 57-over-par.
