T&F: Wenger Records Program’s 2nd Best Time in Steeplechase, Seawolves Finish 4th at Johnny Mathis

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - On Friday and Saturday, April 14th and 15th, the Sonoma State track & field team competed in the Johnny Mathis Invitational hosted by fellow CCAA member San Francisco State. Several season bests and a 2nd all-time program finish from Sara Wenger in the steeplechase highlighted a solid 4th team finish. Wenger went on to record a time of 12:05.26, good for 7th place in the event and the second best time in program history. 

Additional personal bests came from Mia Cecilio in the 400 meters, Kyra Togni and Emma Lopez in the hammer throw, and Ariyah Ford in the shot put. Cecilio finished in 4th place with a time of 1:00.06. Togni and Lopez both recorded top-3 finishes in the hammer throw, Togni with a mark of 43.56 meters and Lopez with a mark of 42.31 meters. Ford would be the lone competitor for the Seawolves in the shot put but make her mark, as she recorded a throw of 10.97 meters good for a top-3 finish of her own. 

SSU recorded another pair of top-3 finishes in the discus with Ford and fellow freshman Halle McDaniels finishing in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Ford would record a mark of 38.50 meters with McDaniels closely behind with a mark of 38.42 meters. Versatile freshman Kathyrn Rust also recorded a 2nd place finish in the high jump with a mark of 4'10.25''. Rounding out the field events would be second year member Katie Sheldon as she finished 7th in the long jump, recording a mark of 15'0.75''. 

For the track events, Alex Doyle would join Wenger in the steeplechase and record a time of 13:24.17. Sheldon would record a solid 3rd place finish in the 400 meter hurdles and Cecilio would also compete in the 200 meter dash, recording a time of 26.85 seconds, good for 9th place. Sonoma State would record a total of 68 points in the two day meet, good for 4th place out of 17 competing teams. They would finish as the second best CCAA school in the meet behind Cal State Monterey Bay who sat in 3rd place.
