Severo Hits High Jump Provisional Mark While Leading Seawolves at 2025 NYC Gotham Cup

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK- Sonoma State has gotten off to a great start to the 2024-2025 Indoor Track and Field season with another strong showing at the 2025 NYC Gotham Cup. The team competed across 10 different events with great performances both on the track and out in the field.

Kickstarting the meet was the freshmen duo of Mia Cecilio and Sydney Lopes. Both runners took part in the 400 meter race in which Cecilio broke the 60 second mark with a final time of 59.93 which saw her secure a top 10 finish and post the top freshman time of the day. Lopes was not far behind with a final time of 62.07 seconds as she was just two seconds behind a top 10 finish as well. The pair also raced in the 200 meter dash where they posted identical times of 26.77.

Once again Constance O'Neal had herself a strong outing, this time in the 3000 meter race. In a field of 30 athletes, O'Neal secured a second place finish while almost managing to post a sub-10 minute time finishing the race in 10:03.23. Over her last two meets she now has a first and second place finish under her belt setting her up nicely to continue with the momentum she created back in the fall during cross country season.

The highlight of the day came courtesy of the team's high jumping trio of Jazmine Severo, Amber Walker, Kathryn Rust. Severo not only secured a first place finish but her mark of 1.70 meters cleared the NCAA Division II provisional height placing her firmly in the hunt for qualifying for the national championship meet. Freshman Amber Walker also hit the provisional mark at the Moravian Invitational but took second place behind Severo at the Gotham Cup with a final mark of 1.65 meters. Lastly, Kathryn Rust also cracked the top 10 in the high jump thanks to clearing 1.55 meters.

Another freshman who put together a solid performance was Katie Snedden. Snedden was the lone Seawolf to compete in the pole vault where she would win the event with a 3.25 meter final mark.

Lasty, the duo of Ariyah Ford and Halle McDaniels represented Sonoma in both the shot put and weight throw with both athletes having solid days in the throwing ring. In the shot put both athletes would finish in the top 10 with Ford's 12.14 meter throw bringing home a seventh place finish. McDaniel's 11.60 meter throw was enough for her to reach a tenth place spot out of close to 40 competitors. In the weight throw, McDaniel's rose to the occasion throwing 16.45 meters and taking second place in the event. Meanwhile, Ford was able to take twelfth place behind a solid 14.11 meter throw.
