Final Results
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- For the seventh time in her career,
Spencer Heller placed as a runner-up to the individual medalist winner, firing a six-over-par 150, finishing just one stroke behind tournament champion Megan Woodland (149; +5). She paced the Sonoma State women's golf team to a third place finish at the Point Loma Nazarene Super San Diego Championship on the par-72 Riverwalk Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. on Monday and Tuesday.
Heller ended the day Tuesday with four shots more than yesterday's score of 73 to card a 150 for the week. While her final round score of 77 was two strokes better than Woodland, it wasn't enough to catch the medal winner from Victoria-BC. Heller was followed by Grand Canyon's Charlotte Jaengkit (152; +8), who finished third, and four other players tied for fourth with identical scores of 153 (+9).
McKayla Kennedy carded a 157 (+13) in the two-day tournament to place 13th,
Elisse Van Deusen (85-80) and
Zoei Zbaraschuk (82-83) both tied for 33rd at 165 (+21) and
Samantha Balanon tied for 47th at 168 (+24).
Cal State San Marcos (626; +50), which trailed No. 8 Grand Canyon and Sonoma State after Monday's first round by one shot, passed the two teams in Tuesday's final round to capture the tournament title by six strokes over runner-up Grand Canyon (632; +56). Sonoma State (635; +59) ended the 36-hole event just three shots back of GCU for third place. Host Point Loma Nazarene (647; +68) placed fourth ahead of fifth-place Northwood-TX (647; +71) and sixth-place Claremont Mudd Scripps (648; +72) in the 20-team tournament.
It was the 25th time in the six-year history of the Sonoma State women's golf program that the team has finished in the Top 3 of the 59 tournaments it has participated in all-time.
Sonoma State takes a week off before heading to Austin, Texas for the St. Edward's Invitational at Grey Rock Golf Club on Feb. 25-26.
