Ally Sather continued her impressive Sonoma State volleyball debut on Friday night in a 3-1 Seawolves' victory over Western Oregon at the Seawolf Spike in Rohnert Park. The Santa Rosa native had 17 kills and hit at a blistering .517 clip to lead the Seawolves to a 2-0 record on the first day of the 2009 season. The Western Oregon Wolves drop to 0-2.
Sonoma State picked up the victory by scores of 25-16, 25-10, 22-25, and 25-23.
The Seawolves wasted little time early on, jetting to a two sets to none lead in about 35 minutes. Sonoma hit .351 in the first and .345 in the second to blow past the Wolves.
Things got a little trickier in the third as any hopes for a sweep were dashed by a resurgent Wolves club that limited Sonoma to .125 hitting.
The Seawolves would rebound in the fourth and edge the Wolves by two points.
For the game, Sonoma State hit .257- with just 12 errors and 50 kills in 148 attempts. Western Oregon connected at a .094 pace.
Sather's 17 kills came against just two errors and in only 29 attempts. She had 11 kills in the first game of the day against Notre Dame de Namur and will go to bed after her first day of collegiate volleyball action with 28 kills and just six errors.
Sather was assisted by 11 kills from
Keala Peterson and 42 assists from
Lindsay Brown.
Taylor Krenwinkel had a game-high 27 digs and both
Ali Walker and
Sarah Illingworth delivered five blocks.
Sylvia Herrold had 11 kills to lead the Wolves. Laura Sakala pitched in with nine and Amy Herron posted nine kills.
The Seawolves will continue play at the Seawolf Spike on Saturday with two games, the first an 11:30 battle with Dominican University.
