Box Score: UC San Diego 3, Sonoma State 2
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State and UC San Diego combined for 212 digs defensively and 138 kills on 417 attacks on offense, but the Tritons, who led the match 2-0, held off the Seawolves in five sets to claim victory on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves fell to 10-6 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The Tritons finished the season sweep of SSU, improving to 9-7 (6-6 CCAA).
It was the first time since 2008 that Sonoma State recorded digs up into the triple digits, marking one of the best defensive performances since then. Four SSU players had double-digit digs, including the game-high 31 by
Taylor Krenwinkel.
Lindsay Lytle had 21 digs to go along with a team-high 29 assists.
The offense, though, was led by the 25 kills of
Ally Sather, the most by a Seawolf this season. She hit .281 on 64 swings and seven errors.
Keala Peterson chipped in with 16 kills and a .216 hitting percentage, but UC San Diego held the edge in kills, 72-64.
The Tritons had four in double-figure kills -- Roxanne Brunsting and Katie Condon had 16 apiece. Brunsting had an all-around game, recording 17 digs and passing out a game-high 33 assists. Janessa Werhane had 30 digs.
Both teams were very close in each statistical category. SSU led by just one point in hitting percentage (.221-.220) and UCSD had one more block (7-6). The rest of the stat sheet was even, including service aces (4) and digs (106).
The match featured 26 ties and 11 lead changes, many of which came in the first two sets. However, the Tritons snagged a 2-0 match lead with 25-23 and 25-21 in the first and second sets, respectively. In the third set, UC San Diego never held a lead and tied the set once, but Sonoma State came away with the 25-22 win.
The fourth set stayed close for the majority of the frame, as 14 ties and five lead changes spearheaded an emotional fight by each team, but the Seawolves dug down, literally, and forced the deciding fifth set with a 25-20 win. UC San Diego then shot out of the gate in the fifth, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, and eventually took the set and match 15-8.
Sonoma State will return to action on Saturday against 23rd-ranked Cal State East Bay. First serve from The Wolves' Den is scheduled for 7 p.m.
