Golden Eagles Hold Off Seawolves, 3-1, On Thursday

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Brooke Moore had 11 blocks and Ally Sather led the way with 19 kills, but visiting Cal State L.A. had four players with kills and digs in double-figures to spell defeat for the Seawolves in four sets (22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 21-25) on Thursday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves, who are ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II West Region poll this week, fell to 16-9 overall and 13-8 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles improve to 15-10 and 12-9.

Sather's 19 kills led the Seawolves and Keala Peterson added 12 kills. It is the 10th straight match that Peterson has recorded double-figure kills. It was a huge night for Moore though, rejecting a game-high 11 attacks, just two blocks from tying a school record for most in a match. Hayley Ross was also a huge presence at the net, stopping five attacks, all of which were assisted.

Both teams stayed close in the opening frame, as the two squads tied 10 times and the lead changed three times. Cal State L.A. took the third and final lead when Zuzana Cizova slammed a kill to take the 23-22 lead. The Golden Eagles scored the next two points to win 25-22. Cal State L.A. took a two sets to none lead after a 25-20 win in the second set as they hit at a .316 clip with 18 kills in 38 attacks.

The Seawolves bounced back to force a fourth set with a 25-19 win in the third set. It was in that frame that SSU had its most efficient set, hitting at .297 clip with 15 kills in 37 swings. However, in the final set, the Golden Eagles put the Seawolves away with a 25-21 win, even though SSU forced a 17-17 tie late in the set.

Cizova led all scorers with 21 kills while Marquis Mora added 13. Natalia Gonzalez and Chelsea Hamilton also hit in double-figures with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Cizova was the only CSULA player with a double-double; she recorded 13 digs. The Golden Eagles were led defensively by Stefanie Gay, who had a game-high 24 digs. Mora had eight blocks (seven assisted).

Cal State L.A. led the hitting percentage battle (.244 to .173), along with kills (64-47), assists (62-44), services aces (5-3) and digs (82-58). Sonoma State led in team blocks with 14 to CSULA's 12.

Taylor Krenwinkel again had double-digit digs with 20. Ross, who had the aforementioned five blocks, spread out the offense with 28 assists.

Sonoma State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills. It will feature senior night, as two SSU seniors will be recognized in a special pre-game ceremony -- Kendahl Batiste and Amanda Vanover.
