LOS ANGELES, Calif- Senior Laurel Strickin scored five goals and a quartet of Seawolves scored a pair of goals, helping Sonoma State to a 16-6 drubbing of Chapman in the second game of the Loyola Marymount University Invitational at the Burns Recreation and Aquatic Center in Los Angeles. However, nationally-ranked Princeton humbled the Seawolves in their second game, 17-2. The split sends SSU to a 3-16 record this season.
Sonoma State grabbed a 4-1 lead just four minutes into the match on two goals by Stricklin, one by
Holly Armijo and one by
Laura Kunz. Chapman added a goal at the 3:17 mark of the first quarter to close the Seawolf lead to 4-2, but goals by Stricklin and
Lindsay Rangel put Sonoma State ahead 6-2 midway through the second period.
Two consecutive goals by Chapman put the score at 6-4 before
Kyleigh Shea and
Sarah Rosenthal got in on the scoring for the Seawolves, giving SSU a 8-4 lead at halftime.
The Seawolves then blew the Panthers out of the water in the third period, scoring five goals to take a commanding 13-4 lead. SSU added three more in the fourth quarter, surrendering just two Chapman goals, taking the biggest victory of the season, 16-6.
Gina Uliana made two saves for Sonoma State in the match and
Katrina Musco saw some playing time in the second half, making two saves as well.
In Sonoma State's second game on Friday, the Seawolves ran into 20th-ranked Princeton and fell 17-2. The Tigers jumped out to a huge 16-0 lead before Sonoma State could score. Stricklin scored both goals for SSU. Musco got the start for the Seawolves in the cage, her first this season, making eight saves.
Sonoma State will wrap up the Loyola Marymount Invite tomorrow with matches against Pomona-Pitzer at 9:15 a.m. and host Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m.
