Water Polo Splits On Opening Day Of Roadrunner

BAKERSFIELD, Calif- Sonoma State jumped out to a big 7-2 lead late in the second half and held Cal State San Bernardino at bay to take an 8-5 victory on Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational, hosted by Cal State Bakersfield. However, the Seawolves fell 8-4 to Brown University in their second match of the day as they move to 4-20 overall and 2-7 in WWPA action.

In the opener, Holly Armijo, Laurel Stricklin and Brooke Smith scored two goals apiece, and Gina Uliana made 12 saves to help the Seawolves win their second conference game, 8-5, over Cal State San Bernardino.

The Seawolves hung tough against Brown in the second game and Uliana made 10 huge saves, including two saves on penalty shots, but the Bears pulled away after a 3-3 tie in the third quarter to win 8-4.

Stricklin had three goals and Emily Pearce added a score for Sonoma State in the loss.

Sonoma State will wrap up the Roadrunner Invitational tomorrow with two matches against UC San Diego (8 a.m.) and Chapman (11:30 a.m.).
