Box Score: #11 UC San Diego 3, Sonoma State 0

LA JOLLA, Calif- Keala Peterson notched her second double-double of the season and Ally Sather once again led Sonoma State with 12 kills, but No. 11 UC San Diego used a very efficient and balanced attack to sweep the visiting Seawolves (14-25, 21-25, 22-25) on Saturday night at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. Sonoma State remains winless in conference play at 0-2 (3-3 overall) and UC San Diego improved to 5-1 and 2-0 in CCAA play.

The Tritons hit just .211 in the match and no player had more than 10 kills, but they had a huge game on defense, recording 63 digs and 14 assisted blocks en route to the 3-0 sweep of the Seawolves. Kaitlin Potter led UCSD with nine kills, no errors on 19 swings (.474) and the reigning Molten/CCAA Player of the Week Roxanne Brunsting had just seven kills in the victory.

In the opening set, both teams traded sideouts and found themselves tied at 9-9. However, the Tritons went on a 13-4 run to convincingly take the first set 25-14. Sonoma State endured a tiring second set, fighting through a match-high nine tie scores and four lead changes and led 19-17 at one point. UC San Diego came right back to knot the set at 20 and went on to score five of the final six points to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Neither team hit particularly well in the second frame as UC San Diego hit .206 to Sonoma State's .179 -- SSU's best set of the night in terms of hitting percentage.

The Seawolves looked to control the latter part of the third set, leading 21-18 after a kill by Peterson. A service error by UCSD's Janessa Werhane got Sonoma State closer to avoiding the sweep, putting the Seawolves up 22-20. However, the Tritons went on to score five straight points to secure the victory.

Sonoma State will travel to Turlock on Friday to take on the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus, beginning at 7 p.m. at Warrior Arena before taking on Chico State at Chico on Saturday, also at 7 p.m. The Seawolves will return home on Sept. 23 to host Cal Poly Pomona at The Wolves' Den.
