Peterson, Seawolves Grab Two Victories At Spike

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Junior Keala Peterson blasted 30 kills and sophomore Ally Sather added 23, helping Sonoma State start off the 2010 season on the right foot, defeating Dominican, 3-0, earlier in the day, then dispatching BYU-Hawaii, 3-1, in the nightcap to go to to 2-0 overall this season.

Game One

Peterson had 10 kills and Sather finished with nine in their 2010 debuts, helping No. 21 Sonoma State to a quick 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-17) victory over Dominican at the Seawolf Spike on Friday afternoon. It was the season opener for the Seawolves, but the Penguins fell to 0-2 on the season after an earlier loss to Chico State.

Peterson and Sather's 19 combined kills helped Sonoma State to 42 overall, with senior Kendahl Batiste adding seven into the mix. The Seawolves had the hot hand in the match, hitting at a .318 clip (42k-15e-85a). Batiste hit .500 for the match, recording the aforementioned seven kills with just one error in 12 attempts.

Freshman Hayley Ross, senior Amanda Vanover and junior transfer Lindsay Lytle were dominant from the service line, recording three service aces apiece. Ross and Lytle, making their Sonoma State debut, shared time as the Seawolves' setter, handing out 18 and 11 assists, respectively.

For Dominican, Seluia Falealili led the way with six kills as the Penguins hit just .103 for the match (25k-17e-78a).

Sonoma State will wrap up day one of the Seawolf Spike tonight at 7 p.m. when it hosts BYU-Hawaii.

Game Two

After pulling ahead 2-0 in the match, Sonoma State lost a hard-fought third set, but regrouped in the fourth, helping to defeat BYU-Hawaii (25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 27-25) in four sets on Friday night at The Wolves' Den.

Peterson smashed in 20 kills en route to a .312 hitting percentage and completed her first double-double of the season with 14 digs. Sather raked in 14 kills against the Seasiders on 50 attempts and six errors. Brooke Moore and Lytle pounded eight and seven kills, respectively.

Ross and Lytle again shared quarterbacking duties, passing out 25 and 18 assists, respectively. Junior Taylor Krenwinkel was again a dominant force in the backcourt, leading the way with 30 digs and also had a match-high five service aces, some of which came on several key runs in the third set before Sonoma State fell just short of the sweep.

Although the Seawolves hit just .186 as a team, they outhit BYU-Hawaii by .003. Julia Becker had 16 kills for the Seasiders and Losaline Faka'osi added 14. Four BYUH players recorded double-digit digs, including Faka'osi and Nobuko Kotoyori with 20 apiece.

Sonoma State will return to the court Saturday for two more matches -- hosting Grand Canyon (1:30 p.m.) and Seattle Pacific (7 p.m.) at The Wolves' Den.
