Volleyball Splits On Final Day Of Seawolf Spike

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sophomore Ally Sather had a team-high eight kills, but Seattle Pacific's Lindsey Wodrich and Nikki Lowell combined for 29 of the Falcons' 46 kills as Sonoma State fell in three straight sets (22-25, 23-25, 19-25) to close out the 2010 Seawolf Spike on Saturday at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves split on the final day after defeating Grand Canyon earlier in the day.

SSU will head into California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next weekend with a 3-1 overall record. The Seawolves will head to Cal State East Bay on Friday to take on the Pioneers at 7 p.m. Seattle Pacific remains undefeated at 4-0.

Game One

Four players had eight or more kills, including sophomore Brooke Moore who hit at a blazing .467 clip and led the way on defense with seven blocks, helping Sonoma State to a three-set sweep of Grand Canyon in women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at The Wolves' Den.

Keala Peterson and Lindsay Lytle continued to be a dominant force on offense for Sonoma State, hammering in nine kills. Lytle, a junior transfer from Rhode Island, hit .429 by not committing an error in 21 attacks. Moore and Sather added eight kills in the victory. Freshman Hayley Ross had a game-high 30 assists.

The Seawolves outhit the Antelopes, .294 to .124, as SSU committed only nine attack errors in 109 attempts. The most outstanding number came from play at the net, as Sonoma State blocked 19 hits, 14 of which were assisted.

For Grand Canyon, Kaitlynn Ausmus had a game-high 11 kills and Stephanie McBride recorded eight.

Game Two

In the final game of the Seawolf Spike against Seattle Pacific, both teams endured 11 ties and five lead changes, but it was the Falcons who pulled away to grab the narrow 25-22 win in the first set.

Sonoma State then jumped out to a 17-12 lead in set number two, but fueled by the serving of Holly Mueller, Seattle Pacific reeled off 11 straight points to take the 23-17 lead. Eventually, the Falcons held the Seawolves off to take a 2-0 match lead.

The third set was much closer throughout, as both teams were deadlocked at 17. However, Seattle Pacific again spearheaded a six point run to all but close out the match with a three-set victory over the No. 21 Seawolves.

The All-Tournament Team was announced shortly after the final match -- Seattle Pacific's Lindsey Wodrich grabbed Most Valuable Player honors. Joining her on the all-tournament team was teammate Nikki Lowell, San Francisco State's Lauren Walsh, Chico State's Jessica Leek, Cal State Stanislaus' Lianne Vicchio and Sonoma State's Taylor Krenwinkel.
