Stanley Paces Seawolves With 24 In Season-Opening Victory

Ryan Stanley scored 18 first-half points, finishing with a team-high 24 in his first game at Sonoma State.
BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Newcomer Ryan Stanley torched the nets for a team-high 24 points in his Seawolf debut and Will Olsem drained five three-pointers helping the Sonoma State men's basketball team start 2011-12 off on the right foot, defeating Simon Fraser, 80-74, on Friday night as part of the 11th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves (1-0) will take on Concordia-Irvine (2-1) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Clan falls to 1-1 in the early going and will face San Francisco State (1-2) at 5:30 p.m., prior to the SSU/CUI game.

Sonoma State led start to finish, but Simon Fraser kept things close for the majority of the night. Sharpshooter Olsem started the season just as he does best, connecting on a three-pointer in the Seawolves' first offensive possession on Friday. A pair of free throws by the Clan's Justin Brown got the visitors from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada to within one point several moments later, but Sonoma State would slowly make its move, eventually taking a 14-point lead (23-9) at the 10:36 mark of the first half, its largest lead of the game.

Simon Fraser would begin chipping away at its deficit, even cutting the SSU lead to just two at 33-31 with 1:15 to play in the oepning half, but a layup and two free throws by Stanley along with a jumper by Jabri Jenkins at the buzzer put the Seawolves up eight points at halftime (39-31).

After the intermission, Sonoma would remain in command until a layup by Simon Fraser's Javari Williams got the game to within three points at 58-55 with just under 10 minutes in regulation. Another offensive spurt by the Seawolves, solely by the hands of Olsem (two three's and a jumper), quickly put the hosts back up 11 points at 66-55.  The lead out remain about the same until a three pointer by Daniel Deflorimonte and a free throw by Williams got the Clan back within just five points at 79-74, but it would be too little too late as Sonoma State held on for the 80-74 win after a free throw by Steven Pratt with nine ticks remaining.

Stanley connected on 9 of 13 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line, as Sonoma State was 29 of 61 (47.5 percent) from the floor on the night. Olsem hit 6 of 12, including 5 of 8 from downtown. Pratt was just four assists shy from a triple-double, scoring 10 points, corralling a game-high 12 rebounds and passing out six assists.

For Simon Fraser, Williams led all scorers with 28 points, 23 of which came in the final 20 minutes of the ballgame. Brown added double-figures for the Clan as well, dropping in 14 points.

Sonoma State will wrap up the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., playing host to Concordia University of Irvine. The Eagles are ranked at No. 4 in the NAIA Division I Top 25 poll.
