Walter, Seawolves Shoot Past Penguins, 76-63, At NDNU Invite

BOX SCORE BELMONT, Calif- Jason Walter scored a career-high 20 points and Steven Pratt chipped in with 14, passing out a game-high eight assists as the Sonoma State men's basketball team had its most efficient night of shooting in program history, knocking down 65.1 percent of its shots en route to a 76-63 win over Dominican at the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational in Belmont on Friday night. The Seawolves improve to 2-1 on the season while the Penguins remain winless at 0-6.

Dominican got off to a quick start, leading by scores of 7-1 and 11-4 before Sonoma State ended up going on a 15-2 run, with the help of seven points by Patrick Scott to eventually lead by six points at 19-13.  The Penguins wouldn't go away, pulling to within two points on a pair of occasions before the Seawolves extended their lead to as much as 10 points on another pair of occasions, including a 39-29 advantage with 30 seconds left in the opening half.  A basket by Dominican with one second left, cut the SSU lead to eight points at halftime, 39-31.

The Seawolves opened up the second half with a 9-2 run and stretched themselves to a large 15-point advantage at 48-33 with 16:29 on the clock.  However, the Penguins began to make a run and even cut the lead to only five points at 57-52 with a little over eight minutes left. It would be as close as DUC would get, because SSU scored 19 of the games next 22 points to earn its largest lead of the night, a 21-point lead at 76-55 with under two minutes left.

In the final 1:19 of the night, the Penguins scored the game's final eight points, but it was too little, too late as Sonoma State earned the 13-point win.

It proved to be the best shooting night in Sonoma State men's basketball history, as the Seawolves hit 28 of 43 shots on the night, a 65.1 percent output. topping a 64.7 clip against UC San Diego on Jan. 28, 2005. Walter's 20 points came on 6 of 8 shooting, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.  Pratt's 14 came on 5 of 7 from the floor in addition to his team-highs of eight assists, six rebounds and three steals. Will Olsem added 11 points and Scott scored 10 points.

Four players scored in double-figures for Dominican, led by the 12 points of Derek Ober.  The Penguins hit on only 38.5 percent of their shots (25-65).

Sonoma State will be back in action on Saturday, facing tournament host Notre Dame de Namur at 7:00 p.m. in Belmont.
