Desirae Sanchez came off the bench and scored a team-high 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting, including 3 of 5 from three-point range in just nine minutes of action, but the Sonoma State women's basketball ran into the hot hands of Seattle Pacific, which shot 60 percent from the floor, in Friday's 83-65 loss at the CCAA/GNAC Challenge on Friday in Seattle. The Seawolves fall to 2-3 on the year as the Falcons rise to 6-2.
It was a career-high game for Sanchez in just her second-ever collegiate contest. She nailed three three-pointers in the final 2:32 of the game; the final three-ball coming with only 19 seconds on the clock in regulation.
Aly Henington and
Travis Newman teamed up to score eight points apiece, while
Roxanne Rentschler and
Tori Carroll added seven each.
As a team, Sonoma State shot 39.4 percent from the floor on 26 of 66, including 8 of 25 from beyond the arc (32.0 percent). The Seawolves only got to the free throw line for a total of eight attempts on the night, making five. Sonoma State gave up the ball just 13 times, while forcing 23 Seattle Pacific turnovers.
It was all Seattle Pacific, however, as the hosts were unstoppable from the field, hitting 30 of its 50 shots (60.0 percent), including 10 of 20 from long range and 13 of 14 from the charity stripe. Five Falcons scored in double-figures, led by the 16 points of Katie Benson, who also brought down eight rebounds and had five assists. Nyesha Sims and Aubree Callen had 12 points apiece; Sims grabbed a game-high 11 boards. SPU outrebounded SSU, 37-24, including 32-15 on the defensive glass.
The Seawolves made the Falcons work in the first half, forcing four ties, including a Henington jumper that knotted the game at 24-24 with 6:05 left in the opening period. However, Seattle Pacific went on a hot streak and scored 14 unanswered points over a span of five minutes to lead 38-24. SPU eventually got up by as much as 16 points at 42-26, but a Rentschler three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer put SSU within 13 points at 42-29.
In the second half, the Falcons continued their blazing offense and eventually extended their lead to a game-high 28 points (76-48) with 5:00 minutes left in the game. Several three pointers by Sanchez and Carroll would cut down the Falcon lead, but it was too little, too late as host Seattle Pacific earned the 83-65 win on its home floor.
Sonoma State will be back in action on Saturday at the CCAA/GNAC Challenge when it plays Western Washington, starting at 5:00 p.m. at Brougham Pavilion on the campus of Seattle Pacific University. The Vikings lost to CCAA-foe Chico State, 66-63, in the earlier game on Friday at SPU.
