ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Kelsey Hull slammed 12 kills and Keala Peterson added 10 as Sonoma State cruised to another three-set victory on Wednesday, defeating Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's volleyball action at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves (5-2, 3-0 CCAA) have won three straight matches to open conference play while the Lumberjacks fall to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA.

The Sonoma State defense played a huge match, particularly holding Humboldt State's heavy-hitter Oceana Matsubu to just six kills. Matsubu came into Wednesday's contest with 4.90 kills per set, the second-most in Division II.

The match was never really in doubt from start to finish. The Seawolves opened up with a 16-4 lead in the first set and never looked back, taking the set 25-13. The Lumberjacks had just three kills in the opening frame as SSU held the visitors to a negative hitting percentage at -.143. Meanwhile, Sonoma State hit at a .333 clip with 16 kills, including five from Hull

Humboldt State held its ground in the second set, playing toe-to-toe with Sonoma State, leading 7-5. However, the Seawolves reeled off eight straight points on their way to a 10-1 run and a 15-8 lead. After a pair of points to get HSU within five, SSU scored 10 of the set's next 14 points to win set number two, 25-14.

Just like in the second set, the Lumberjacks started strong, leading 5-3 at one point early in the third set. That's when the Seawolves started to pour it on, scoring eight consecutive points to kick start a deflating 20-2 run to put the hosts up 23-7. Humboldt State scored four of the next five points, but a kill by Regan Richert put the match away with a 25-11 win in the clinching set.

Hull hit .381 for Sonoma State with the aforementioned 12 kills in 21 attacks, erring just four times. Peterson hit .320 with 10 kills and two errors in 25 swings while Ally Sather chipped in with nine kills. As a team, the Seawolves hit at a .292 clip, holding the 'Jacks at sub-zero (-.080). Hayley Ross passed out 26 assists and Peterson (4) and Sammi Bentovoja (3) combined for seven of the team's nine service aces. Two of Bentovoja's aces came at the tail end of the 20-2 run in the third set. Taylor Krenwinkel led all defenders with 12 digs, moving her to within 68 digs of the all-time record of 1,704, set by former Seawolf Taylor Manton (2004-07).

Humboldt State's Matsubu had six of the 13 kills for the 'Jacks, which hit negatively with 19 errors in 75 swings.

Sonoma State will hit the road this weekend to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Both matches are schedule to begin at 7:00 p.m. Following their brief two-match road swing around the Bay Area, the Seawolves will return home for a season-long five-match homestand, beginning with a non-conference tilt against Dominican on Tuesday.
