SEASIDE, Calif- The Sonoma State women's volleyball team got off to a slow start, but after falling in the first set, the Seawolves began to heat up, rallying to win the next three sets en route to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-17) match victory over previously-unbeaten Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night at the Kelp Bed.
Ally Sather led the way with 16 kills and
Taylor Krenwinkel raked in a season-high 29 digs as SSU moves to a perfect 4-0 record in CCAA action (6-2 overall). The Otters fall to 5-1 (2-1 CCAA).
The Seawolves hit just .087 in the opening frame, but rebounded to progressively attack at a higher percentage as the match moved from set to set. Sonoma State had its most efficient output when it hit at a .406 clip in the fourth set to put away Cal State Monterey Bay for good.
While the offensive warmed up, the Seawolf defense was stellar, recording a season-high 90 digs, led by the two-time All-American libero Krenwinkel. Krenwinkel moves to within 40 digs of eclipsing the all-time record of 1,704. Four other Sonoma State players made double-digit digs, including
Keala Peterson's 16 to complete her first double-double of the season with 13 kills.
Brooke Moore had a big night at the net, rejecting five attacks -- two of which were solo blocks.
Both teams played extremely close in the first set, as neither team led by more than two points until Sonoma State led 15-12. However, Cal State Monterey Bay would jump right back ahead, reeling off six straight points to lead 18-15. The Seawolves clawed their way back to within one point at 20-19, but the host Otters would push away and grab the 25-22 win to lead 1-0 in the match.
The second set played to be even closer between two of the CCAA's top teams, as the matched warranted 12 tie scores and 10 lead changes. After an assisted block by CSUMB's Melanie Lashbrook and Rheann Fall on an attack by
Lindsay Lytle to put the Otters up 15-14, SSU would unleash a run of six straight points to control a 20-15 lead. Cal State Monterey Bay would only get to within four on one occasion while Sonoma State ran away with the 25-19 win to knot the match at 1-1.
Early on in the third, the Seawolves would again kick start a six-point run to extend their lead to 11-5. The Otters would again climb back to within three points at 13-10, but Sonoma State scored 12 of the set's next 15 points to lead the match 2-1 with the convincing 25-13 win in the third frame.
In the fourth, it was Sonoma State's match and they proved it. With 15 kills in 32 attacks and just two errors, the Seawolves cruised to a 25-17 win for the set and match victory.
In addition to Sather's and Peterson's offensive performance on Friday,
Regan Richert posted double-digit kills and a stellar .320 hitting percentage. Setter
Hayley Ross handed out a season-high 48 assists to go along with 12 digs and three service aces. Peterson led all players with four aces. Offensively as a team, SSU hit .196, holding CSUMB's powerful hitters to a .095 clip.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Lashbrook and Fall had 11 kills apiece to lead the Otters.
Sonoma State will head to Hayward on Saturday to face another strong team in Cal State East Bay (6-1, 2-1 CCAA). First serve from Pioneer Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
