Olsem Breaks Three-Point Record In Upset Win Over Coyotes

Junior Will Olsem drained a school-record 12 three-pointers on Saturday to help the Seawolves upset the Coyotes.
BOX SCORE SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Junior Will Olsem broke a program record for most made three-pointers in one game, draining 12 three-pointers and finishing with a career-high 38 points as the Sonoma State men's basketball team earned a convincing 86-71 victory over conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.  The Seawolves, who hadn't won in San Bernardino since Mar. 3, 2006, rise to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the CCAA; the Coyotes fall to 9-6 and 8-4 and have lost two straight.

Olsem's career night fell just one three-pointer shy of tying the CCAA record for most three's in a game, which is 13.  He went 12 of 16 from beyond the arc (13 of 17 overall) and, as a team, Sonoma State connected on 15 of 30 three-pointers (29 of 57 overall), which is the most three-pointers given up by Cal State San Bernardino in its history.

It was truly an offensive showcase by both teams that featured 22 three-pointers and five SportsCenter highlight dunks by the Coyotes' Kwame Alexander.  In fact, Cal State San Bernardino shot 56 percent from the floor (28-50) and outrebounded Sonoma State (32-27), but thanks to Olsem's record-breaking night, the Seawolves prevailed.  Coupled with the loss against SSU and Friday's loss to Humboldt State, the Coyotes lost back-to-back home games for the first time since January of 1998.

It wasn't just the play of Olsem that steamrolled SSU past CSUSB.  Justin Herold scored 19 points on 9 of 15 from the hardwood and Steven Pratt recorded a career-high 10 assists, adding seven points, five rebounds and three steals.  As a team, Sonoma State hit 50.9 percent of its shots (29-57), including 16 of 30 in the final 20 minutes.  The Seawolves also took advantage of 22 Coyote turnovers, scoring 31 points off of said miscues (SSU turned the ball over 14 times, turning into 21 CSUSB points).

After the Coyotes' Alexander scored the first two points of the game, the Seawolves would go up by eight points at 19-11 just six minutes into the contest.  The lead would be shortlived, however, as the eight-point advantage by Sonoma State eventually turned into an eight-point, 36-28 lead for Cal State San Bernardino at the 3:55 mark of the opening half.  But, thanks to three-pointers by Olsem, Pratt and Ashley Arnott, along with three free throws from Patrick Scott, the Seawolves managed to cut the Coyote lead to three, 43-40, at halftime.

Eight-point leads seemed to be the norm on Saturday.  At the 8:43 mark of the second period, Sonoma State would regain the eight-point lead on none other than a three-ball by Olsem.  The hosts would power back, getting to within two points at 68-66 on one of five dunks by Alexander, but a three-pointer by Brian Crow and a jumper from Olsem (the only shot he took from inside the arc), built the lead back up to seven.  A three-pointer by CSUSB's Matt Wallace cut the lead to four, but two more three-pointers, a layup by Scott and three free throws by Sterling Arterberry spearheaded an 11-2 run over the last 3:13 of the game to secure the 86-71 win.

Alexander led Cal State San Bernardino with 22 points on 10 of 14 from the floor, adding a game-high 13 rebounds.  Tre Brewer scored 11 points, followed by the 10 points by both Hakee Washington and Johnny Bell.

Sonoma State will head into the second half of the CCAA schedule next week, starting with a trip to Chico State on Friday.  The Seawolves and Wildcats will go to battle at 7:30 p.m.  Following Friday's game at Chico, SSU will head to Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday and then will return home to The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park for six of its last eight regular season games of 2011-12.

GAME NOTES:  It was SSU's first win in San Bernardino since the Seawolves beat the Coyotes, 63-61, back on Mar. 3, 2006, snapping a streak of six games.  Prior to that, SSU hadn't won at San Bernardino since Nov. 25, 1997.  Sonoma State moves to 4-18 against Cal State San Bernardino (just 2-15 in the last 17 games) inside Coussoulis Arena.  Will Olsem's 12 three-pointers is tied for the most made in one game in all of Division II this season, matching Simon Cummings of Florida Tech, who dropped in 12 threes against Trinity (FL) on Dec. 19 (including a Division II record 10 consecutive three-pointers without a miss).
