BOX SCORE 2 ROHNERT PARK, Calif.-- The Sonoma State Seawolves played like two completely different teams on Friday afternoon, scoring 14 runs in the opener, but just a single run in the nightcap, to split a doubleheader with visiting San Francisco State. Game one saw
Jackson Stogner and
Devon Zenn combine to go 8 for 8 in a 20-hit outburst, leading the way to a 14-1 victory. In game two, SF State bounced back with a 6-1 win. Sonoma remains atop the CCAA with a 14-4 record, while the Gators remain at .500 with 9-9 conference record.
Game 1: Sonoma State 14, San Francisco State 1 (
Box Score)
Another dominant performance on the mound from
Thomas Lee made way for the Seawolves' offense to explode. Improving to 5-0 on the season, Lee went seven innings, allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out six. Eric Watts got the start for the Gators and pitched five innings, giving up 14 hits and eight runs, all of which were earned.
The Sonoma State bats started early, scoring seven runs in the first inning, three of which came off of singles.
Jeff Boulware had a sacrifice fly to right that scored
Garrett Gooselaw, followed by
Justin Serrao being hit by the pitch to load the bases. Stogner would the proceed to hit a bases-clearing double to give the Lee and the Seawolves more run support than they would end up needing.
Sonoma State would be held silent for two innings before Gooselaw scored Stogner on a sacrifice fly to center field in the fourth to make it 8-0. Jeff Clegg came on in relief for Watts in the sixth inning only to hit Zenn, the first batter he'd face. Zenn would later come around to score on a ground out to shortstop by Boulware.
Leading 9-0, the Seawolves looked to do more damage in the seventh when Gooselaw drew a bases loaded walk to score
Scott Collins.
Kyle Cerrudo pinch hit for
Joel Thys and drove in two runs with a double to left center field.
Garrett Schwartz was the next batter and he singled in another run for Sonoma State, putting them up 13-0 after seven innings of play.
Joey Van Cleave came in for Lee in the eighth and gave up a walk to start the inning, but followed it with two quick outs. Dante Smith had a pinch hit single up the middle moving A.J. Pianto to third. The threat was extinguished when Van Cleave stuck out A.J. Almarez to end the inning.
Scott Templeton led off the Sonoma State eighth with a single back up the middle and he'd eventually come around to score from third on a ground out to shortstop by
Kevin Cramer.
The Gators would finally put a run on the board in the ninth inning on a bases loaded fielder's choice RBI by Pianto that scored Adam Perez. That would be all SF State could muster as Danny Souza struck out to end the game.
Along with Stogner's 5 for 5 performance,
Evan Warner went 2 for 4 and Gooselaw had two hits in three at-bats with three RBIs and two runs scored. Schwartz went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sonoma State had a total of 20 hits in the 14-1 win. The Gators were held to only three hits.
Game 2: San Francisco State 6, Sonoma State 1 (
Box Score)
After plating 14 runs in game one, Sonoma State's offense was stagnant in a 6-1 game two loss. Ryan DeJesus got the start for the Gators and pitched 6.2 innings, giving up seven hits, but only allowing one run.
Taylor Herbert made the start for the Seawolves, going five strong innings and surrendering one unearned run on six hits.
San Francisco State got things started in the fourth inning when Devon King reached on a throwing error by Serrao. The error would come back to haunt the Seawolves as King would eventually score on an RBI single from Thomas Wood to put the Gators up 1-0.
SF State would score two more in the sixth on a fielding error by
Steven Filippi that would allow Souza and Tyler Tulowitzki to cross home plate. Sonoma State got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth on a two out single from Gooselaw, scoring Warner who had reached on a single.
Errors again haunted the Seawolves in the eighth, as Almarez reached on a fielding error by Boulware at third. The error allowed two runs to score, both of which were unearned, to put the score at 5-1. The Gators got one more run in the ninth on a deep homerun to left field by Matt Quintero.
Sonoma State threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases before a double play ended the contest.
Zenn and Johnson went 2 for 4, while Gooselaw provided the only run for the Seawolves. Wood went 3 for 4, driving in two runs and scoring one in the win for the Gators.
Sonoma State will travel south to San Francisco on Saturday (Mar. 31) to wrap up the series. First pitch of the double header is set for 11 a.m.
