BOX SCORE Sonoma State 70, Cal State Stanislaus 67 -- Box Score
TURLOCK, Calif. -- Knocking down free shots from the charity stripe will win ballgames; the Sonoma State men's basketball team proved it Saturday night. Thanks to a team-high 17 points from the hands of
Patrick Scott, including a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line (all in the final six minutes of the contest), combined with a season-high 64.1 percent efficiency from the hardwood as a team, the Seawolves returned to the win column with a 70-67 victory over host Cal State Stanislaus at Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock.
Sonoma State (5-5) returns to .500 and places itself into a three-way tie for fifth place in the CCAA standings with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State East Bay at 3-3 in conference play. Cal State Stanislaus drops to 4-6 overall and just 1-5 in the CCAA.
Only eight players saw the floor for the Seawolves on Saturday, but it wouldn't matter as they would torch the nets with a 64.1 percent clip on 25 of 39 shooting, including just five missed shots in the second half (13 of 18) for 72.2 percent. Even more impressive, Sonoma was a perfect 14 for 14 from the free throw line, 10 of which came in the final 6:02 of regulation.
It was going to take perfection, too. Cal State Stanislaus wasn't going away quietly. In fact, the Warriors took a one-point, 65-64 lead with just 66 seconds left in the contest. That's when Scott nailed four free throws on consecutive possessions to regain a three-point lead at 68-65. Another missed opportunity for the Warriors on their next trip down the court forced them to foul
Jabri Jenkins, who continued Sonoma's hot hand at the line, dropping in two more for a five-point, 70-65 lead. A CSU Stanislaus layup at the buzzer wouldn't skew the outcome as the visiting Seawolves salvaged a weekend split with the win in Turlock.
While the entire first half was closely contested, as was the final six minutes of the ballgame, Sonoma State led by as much as 16 points at 52-36 with 11:34 left in the second half on the tailend of a furious 17-2 run midway through the period. The host Warriors weren't going down without a fight, but the Seawolves held strong for the road win.
Steve Lackey came off the bench to contribute 11 points on 5 of 7 from the floor in 28 minutes.
Will Olsem and
Emmanuel Bradford chipped in with 10 apiece, followed by nine from Jenkins, who also passed out six assists and grabbed six rebounds in the victory.
Cal State Stanislaus was led by Marcus Walters and his game-high 26 points on 11 of 18 from the hardwood, including 4 of 6 from long range. He also led all rebounders with nine boards, six coming from the offensive glass. As a team, the Warriors connected on 43.1 percent of their shots (28 of 65), and just 7 of 21 from three-point range.
Sonoma State returns home on Friday to face Cal State L.A. at 7:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den before Cal State Dominguez Hills visits Rohnert Park a night later.
