LA JOLLA-- The Sonoma State women's water polo team could not find pay dirt on day two of the Triton Invitational, coming up short against Marist College and #17 Hartwick College. With the loss to Hartwick, Sonoma State placed 14th in the Invite with an 0-4 weekend record. The Seawolves drop to 2-8 overall.
MARIST COLLEGE 7, SONOMA STATE 2
Sonoma State got off to a quick start scoring two goals in the first quarter against Marist College in their first game of the final day of the 2013 Triton Invitational.
Brittny Hummel put the Seawolves on the board when she fired in a shot with 1:20 remaining in the first period. One minute and eight seconds later, Collette Reid got one by the Red Fox goaltender with twelve ticks left to give Sonoma State a 2-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Marist would ramp up their competiveness in the second quarter as Ellie Hoffman started the scoring for the Red Foxes. Mackenzie Maynes then hit a shot in the final seconds of the first half to tie the game at 2-2. Marist would go on to score five more unanswered goals on their way to a 7-2 victory. Jessica Hamby tallied a hat trick, scoring one goal in the third and two goals in the fourth quarter. Four other Marist players pitched in with one goal apiece.
Sonoma State netminder
Ariel Lockshaw recorded six saves in the cage, while committing one steal in her eighth start of the season.
#17 HARTWICK 12, SONOMA STATE 9
The Seawolves gave the No. 17th-ranked Hartwick Hawks a run for their money in the 13th-place match, but the Hawk offense was too much for the Seawolves as two Hartwick players record hat tricks as SSU suffered the 12-9 loss. Sonoma State had a hat trick of their own, coming from the hand of Freshman
Noelle Herrera, who scored a goal in the first, second and fourth quarters.
After being outscored 5-2 in the opening period, SSU went on to score six goals over the next two quarters, while Hartwick tallied five over the same span. Trailing 10-8 headed into the fourth quarter, Herrera netted her third goal of the game in hopes to rally back from two down. However, the Hawks would score twice in the fourth to keep the game out of reach, handing SSU the 12-9 defeat.
In addition to Herrera's trifecta, Adrienne Bisherat and
Alexa May record two scores, while
Jessica Stansfield and
Colette Reid chipped in one goal each.
For Hartwick, Kamila Zakirova and Sami Capparelli notched hat tricks while five other players recorded at least one goal for the Hawks in the victory.
Sonoma State will travel to Seaside, Calif. on Friday (Feb. 15) for a Western Water Polo Association match against Cal State Monterey Bay. First sprint is set for 3:00 pm.
