LOS ANGELES -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team used big second half runs in both matches on Saturday to pull out a pair of victories and split its weekend at the LMU Invitational in Los Angeles. The Seawolves (10-13, 5-3 WWPA) scored five goals in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 13-7 win over Cal State San Bernardino before ending the weekend with a 13-4 blowout of Whittier College at Burns Aquatic Center.
Sonoma State never trailed in its first game on Saturday against WWPA-foe Cal State San Bernardino, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead just two minutes into the contest. The Coyotes would come to within one goal on two occasions -- the last being a 3-2 count -- but the Seawolves would take a 5-3 lead into the halftime break.
in the second half, SSU would go on to outscore CSUSB 8-4, including 5-2 in the fourth quarter to cruise to a convincing 13-7 win.
Colette Reid scored three of her match-high four goals in the second half to lead the Seawolves.
Lindsay Rangel,
Adrienne Bisharat and
Brittny Hummel netted two goals apiece, while
Ariel Lockshaw stopped 10 shots in the cage.
In Sonoma's fourth and final match of the LMU Invite, the Seawolves managed just three goals in the first 16 minutes of the match against Whittier, but still led 3-2. It was in the second half that SSU came out on fire, caging 10 balls, including six in the third quarter to secure a dominating 13-4 win over the Poets.
Lexii Morabito paced the Seawolf offense with three goals, while Bisharat,
Alexa May and
Jessica Stansfield threw in two each. Lockshaw made six saves in the victory.
Sonoma State will bounce the mainland and fly to Hawai'i next weekend to compete in the Hawai'i Invitational, beginning with a match against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. First sprint is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
