BOX SCORE Cal State Dominguez Hills 74, Sonoma State 65 -- Box Score
CARSON, Calif. – The Sonoma State men's basketball team suffered a 74-65 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday evening at the Torodome, despite a game-high 17 points from
James Davis.  The Seawolves (1-8, 0-5 CCAA) remain winless in conference play as the Toros improve to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Sonoma State got off to a cold start in the first half, making just five shots from the field in 19 attempts, but a 13 for 16 effort by SSU from the free throw line in the first half kept host Cal State Dominguez Hills from blowing the game wide open.
James Davis recorded three of the five made shots for Sonoma in the half as he led all players in the opening period with 10 points.
With 7:58 left before halftime,
Zen Maki scored on a jump shot to put Sonoma State down by nine points at 24-15, but Cal State Dominguez Hills would keep its visitors from making a shot from the field the rest of the half. During that time, the Toros outscored the Seawolves 17-10 to take the 41-25 lead into the intermission.
Sonoma remained cold to start the second period, allowing Dominguez to extend its lead to as much as 25 points (50-25) with 18:09 remaining in the contest.  However, a
Justin Herold put-back dunk at the 15:43 mark ignited a Seawolf rally that cut a deficit of 24 points (51-27) to as little as six points (68-62) after a made jumper by
Sterling Arterberry with 1:48 to go in the contest.  But, the deficit would prove to be to large to overcome as the Toros held on for the nine-point win to open the new year.
Davis tallied a game-high 17 points on 6 of 13 from the floor, including 3 for 5 from three-point range.  He also added nine rebounds.  Arterberry chipped in with 14 points while Herold recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Sonoma State will look to capture its first conference win of the season on Saturday when the Seawolves visit Cal State L.A. for a 7:30 pm tipoff at the Eagles Nest.
