Seawolves Hang With Marist Redfoxes On Monday, But Lose 9-5

ROHNERT PARK -- Alexa May and Noelle Herrera each scored two goals and the Sonoma State women's water polo team pulled to within one goal early in the second half, but NCAA Division I Marist scored three unanswered goals in a span of four minutes en route to a 9-5 win over the host Seawolves on Monday afternoon at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool on the SSU campus.

Sonoma falls to 7-14 this season while Marist, from Poughkeepsie, New York, and a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), rises to 7-11.

Herrera broke the scoreless tie three minutes into the match with the first of two goals on the day, but the Redfoxes responded with three goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second period.  Kaysie Lewis put a penalty shot into the net with 6:30 remaining before halftime to put SSU down 3-2.  At the 1:02 mark, Marist put one past Andrea Mullul for the 4-2 lead, but May cut the Seawolf deficit in half at 4-3 with her first goal of the day just before the intermission.

The Redfoxes scored another goal on the first possession of the second half, just before Herrera struck again to put the Seawolves down 5-4.  However, visiting Marist scored three more unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead, one that Sonoma State could not overcome.

May, Herrera and Lewis supplied the offense for the hosts while Mallul made 11 saves, 10 of which came in the first half.  Marist was led by Jessica Hamby, who scored four times, and Redfox goalie Skyler Henry made 14 saves on the other end of the pool.

Sonoma State will return to the pool in 11 days on Mar. 27 when it travels to Hayward to face fellow WWPA member Cal State East Bat in a 2:00 pm first sprint.
