ROHNERT PARK -- Cassidy Mundt scored a game-high three goals and added an assist, and
Carleigh Robinson threw in two more goals to help the Sonoma State women's water polo team to a convincing 8-6 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Senior Day Friday at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. With the win, the Seawolves will head into next weekend's WWPA Championship Tournament with a 9-18 overall record and a 1-2 mark in conference play. The Otters fall to 7-11 (0-3 WWPA).
It was all Sonoma from the start as the hosts put up four unanswered goals and didn't allow CSUMB to score their first goal until the 2:00 mark of the second quarter. Mundt recorded the hat trick just before the end of the first half, but a buzzer-beating score by the Otters just before halftime put the score at 5-2 in favor of SSU.
Taylor Brooks scored on the Seawolves' first possession in the third quarter to make it 6-2, but CSUMB's Dinah Aiad got one past
Lisa Rodarmel three minutes later to cut the SSU lead to 6-3. However, Robinson and
Keira Dailey put the game out of reach with goals at the end of the third stanza and a goal to open the fourth period to take an 8-3 lead. The Otters rallied for three scores in the final five minutes, but it was too little, too late.
Complementing the five combined goals from Mundt and Robinson were goals by Dailey, Brooks and
Nicole Groat. Rodarmel made nine saves in the cage.
Sonoma State will head to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio next week to compete in the 2017 WWPA Women's Championship Friday through Sunday (April 28-30). For information regarding the WWPA Championship, visit the official tournament web page by
