Monterey, Calif. – An extremely tight back-and-forth contest, a constant one-point battle till the Monterey Bay scored back to back in the fourth to claim an 8-7 win over the Seawolves in their first Western Water Polo Association game of the season.
Together
Jordan Williams (4-points) and
Annika Erickson (3-points) accounted for all seven of the Seawolves goals. Williams had her third four-point game of the season and Erickson's 7th game scoring more than two points.
The first three goals of the day were off power plays with one minute, the Otters filled the frame first (5:41), then Williams found the net (5:19) assisted by
Amber Hellickson to tie the game 1-1. Monterey Bay answered back seconds later (5:01) for a 2-1 lead. Before the opening quarter come to an end both teams scored again, Erickson scored off an assist from
Brooke Sullivan for a 3-2 score in favor of the Otters.
The Seawolves dominated the second quarter outscoring the Otters 4-to-2. Another Erickson/Sullivan goal in the second quarter tied the game 3-3. Answered by an Otter goal. Williams found the cage with a 5-meter goal. With just about two minutes remaining in the half, Erickson's 2:06 goal (assisted by
Taylor Brooks) gave the Seawolves its first lead of the day 5-4. Otters struck again at 1:29 to the game 5-5, with under a minute left on the clock Williams, scored (assisted by Brooks) on a power play to give the Seawolves a 6-5 lead at halftime.
Unlike the first two quarters both teams scored only once in the third, Williams with her third power-play goal (assisted by Kelly Fallner) of the game the Seawolves took a 7-6 lead into the final quarter.
The Otters offense held the Seawolves scoreless while recording two for the win.
Sullivan with 11 saves in the cage, her fourth double-digit game this season.
