Pomona, Calif. – Sonoma State leaves the Claremont Convergence 3-1 after
Hailey Gellert's game-winning goal with 3 seconds left on the clock lifted Sonoma 10-9 over Division I La Salle University in game one and falling 15-6 to No. 15 Loyola Marymount.
The Seawolves are now 5-7 on the season.
Game One – Sonoma State 10, La Salle 9
Game one was an extremely tight back-and-forth contest. Both squads held the lead multiple times during the game, and never by more than two goals.
The Explorers found the net first, answered back with a goal by
Annika Erickson (1-of-4). La Salle added another halfway through the first to regain its one-point lead. Sonoma State took hold of its first lead of the game when Erickson was on a hat-trick scoring two goals on consecutive possessions. With only two seconds left on the board, the Explorers tied the game 3-3.
The Seawolves struck first in a late scoring second quarter, Gellert and
Taylor Brooks both found the cage helping the Seawolves take hold of a 5-3 lead. Sonoma held La Salle off for most of the second quarter, till the Explorers scored with just under a minute left on the clock.
La Salle opened the second half with a goal at 5:31 to tie the game. The Brooks and Hellickson extended the Seawolves lead by two within the span of a minute. The Explorers kept up with the last minute scoring, finding the cage with 0:27 left in the third.
After Erickson scored the opening fourth quarter goal, the Explorers found the back of the cage three times to gain a lead once again.
Down 9-8 and the clock running down,
Jordan Williams tied the game 9-9 with 20 seconds left in the game. Looking as if the game was going into overtime
Hailey Gellert scored the game-winning goal with 3 seconds left in regulation for the game-winning goal.
Game Two – No. 15 Loyola Marymount 15, Sonoma State 6
The Lions scored seven in the first, as the Seawolves' Gellert scored at 3:01 to lesson the Lions hold 7-1.
Sonoma States
Cameron Gavuzzi and Gellert squeezed a pair of goals between the Lions four, for an 11-3 halftime score.
The Seawolves attacked early out of halftime as Weddle and Williams score in the first two minutes of play. Hellickson scored on a power play as time ran out in the third to help the Seawolves cut its deficit to 12-6.
The Lions held the Seawolves to a zero in the frame, while scoring three times for a final score of 15-6.
