Geneva, Ohio – Despite a strong comeback effort in the fourth quarter with five goals Sonoma State fell 13-12 to No. 8 seed Monterey Bay. The Seawolves will play at 8:00 a.m. (EST.) for 7th place tomorrow against either Salem or Mercyhurst.
Saturday's loss featured a season-high five goals from
Jordan Williams and season-high five assists from
Kelly Failner.
The Seawolves' Jojo Williams recorded the game's first goal (assisted by
Taylor Brooks), answered by an Otter power-play goal at 4:08. With the game knotted up,
Camille Grace found the back of the net with an assist from Failner. Cal State Monterey Bay scored two more goals before the conclusion of the first quarter to take a 3-2 lead over the Seawolves.
The Otters opened the second quarter with a pair of goals to extend its lead to 5-2.
Madelyn Potts found the back of the cage on a power play, assisted by
Hailey Gellert (5-3). The Otters added one, which was quickly answered by back-to-back goals by Williams to get the Seawolves with a goal of Monterey Bay 6-5. With :15 remaining in the half the Otters scored its seventh goal to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
A quick 5-meter goal in the third by the Otters extended its lead to 8-5. William scored her fourth goal of the game at 4:02 assisted by Failner to cut the Seawolves deficit to 8-6. The Otters added a pair, and
Taylor Brooks recorded one for the Seawolves 10-7.
Sonoma States defense held the Otters to three goals in the fifth, as they strung together five of their own. Three back-to-back goals by the Seawolves including a goal by Brooks at 3:06 brought the Seawolves near a tie 12-11, but a goal by the Otters seconds later slowed the comeback momentum (13-11). With 2:19 remaining in the game Williams scored her fifth goal of the day (assisted by Brooks) to get the Seawolves within one goal of the Otters.
Neither team found the back of the net in the final few minutes, as the game finished 13-12.
