Seawolves Finished Eighth at WWPA Championships

Geneva, Ohio – The Sonoma State women's water polo team saw it's 2019 season come to an end Sunday in the 2019 WWPA seventh-place game, suffering a tight 7-6 loss to No. 9 seed Mercyhurst at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Mercyhurst held a 7-3 lead heading into the final quarter, but Sonoma State was able to hold the Lakers scoreless the rest of the way. Hailey Gellert's goal with 58 seconds left pulled the Seawolves within one before Sonoma State had an opportunity to tie it up on the final possession.

The Seawolves came back from a 7-3 deficit in the second half to double its score in the fourth and hold the Lakers scoreless.

Gellert led the team's offense with four goals, and a close fifth that would have knotted the score.

Sonoma State fought back down to the wire as the Lakers tipped away the entry pass to allow the clock to drip to :00.

Gellert, an All-WWPA honorable mention selection, led SSU with four goals in the loss.

The Seawolves finished its 2019 campaign 7-17 overall.
