T&F: Season Bests From Arceneaux, Boyle, and Petersen Highlight Cardinal Classic

STANFORD, CALIF. - On Saturday, March 19th, the Sonoma State track & field team competed in their third straight event this spring at the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Stanford University. The women's 100 meter hurdles and 1500 meter run would kickoff the event for the Seawolves.

TRACK EVENTS:

In the hurdles, senior transfer Amber Lanza would be the lone participant for SSU and finish 5th out of 7 total participants with a time of 16.86 sec. This would be Lanza'a third time competing in the event this spring and her time of 16.86 seconds would beat her previous best by two tenths of a second. Lanza recorded a time of 16.88 seconds in UC Davis's Aggie Open last week. Maddy Petersen would come in as the low finisher for the Seawolves in the 1500 meters. Like Lanza, this would be Petersen's third time competing in this event this spring and she too would set a new career mark with a time of 5:20.65. She would break her previous mark in the 1500 meters by nearly 8 seconds and finish in 14th place overall in the event.

Freshman sprinter Makayla Bernadez would compete in the 400 meters in back-to-back weeks after she set a personal best with a time of 59.26 seconds the week prior at the Aggie Open. Bernadez would not quite get under the 1-minute mark but she would finish 3rd in her heat with a time of 1:00.39. Bernadez would finish 1st in her heat out of fellow CCAA competitors and 2nd out of all D-II competitors in her heat.

Sophomore sprinter Nia Arceneaux highlighted the 100 meter dash for Sonoma State. After recording back-to-back 13-second finishes in the team's previous two meets, Arceneaux would tie her season low and record a time of 13.04 seconds once again. She finished with the same time and an 18th place finish in the 100 meters last week at the Aggie Open. Less than a second separated over 10 participants in the event as Arceneaux would finish 4th in her heat and 18th overall.

Members of the 2021 cross country team Alex Boyle and Zoe Baker-Cohn both competed in the 800 meters on Saturday. Boyle would record a new season best with a time of 2:19.41, just over a second better than their previous time of 2:20.70 at the Aggie Open. Zoe Baker-Cohn participated in the 800 meter event for the third time this season. After recording a time of 3:09.96 in the team's first meet of the season, Baker-Cohn has improved her time by more than 10 seconds as she finished with a time of 2:57.76 today at the Cardinal Classic. Baker-Cohn's season best remains at 2:56.16, she recorded that time last weekend at the Aggie Open.

Katie Sheldon and Sydney Lopes would take 4th and 5th place in the 400 meter hurdles. Sheldon would lead the way for SSU with a new personal best and a top-4 finish. Sheldon's time of 1:10.77 was nearly 2 seconds faster than her previous best of 1:12.59. Lopes would follow in 5th place with a time of 1:13.50. One of the final dash's came in the 200 meters where SSU's Makayla Bernadez and Nia Arceneaux highlighted the event. Arceneaux would record a new season best with a time of 26.82 seconds while Bernadez would follow closely with a time of 26.86 seconds. The two would finish inside the top-20 of a deep 31-person field. Sophie Rodriguez and Abby Ribet would round out the track events on the day in the 5000 meter run. Rodriguez would place 9th with a time of 19:03.96 while Ribbet followed in 10th place with a time of 19:49.10.

FIELD EVENTS:

Senior Amber Lanza would double dip in Saturday's meet as she also competed in the long jump. She would record her second best mark of the season with an 8th place finish and a jump of 4.65 meters. Freshman teammate Katie Sheldon would also compete in the event and tie her season best with a mark of 4.42 meters. Sheldon recorded that exact mark earlier this season at the Cal State East Bay Dual Meet where she took 3rd place overall. She would finish right behind Lanza in 9th place out of the field.

Freshman thrower Brittney Glor competed in her 4th straight event for the Seawolves this weekend as she was the lone participant in the shot put. Glor finished in 5th place with a mark of 9.13 meters (29'11.5''). Fellow throwers Emma Lopez and Haley Azevedo competed in the hammer throw on Saturday for the third time this season. After both placed inside the top-10 last week at the Aggie Open, Azevedo and Lopez would finish in 12th and 13th place respectively. Azevedo just edged out Lopez with a mark of 35.17 meters while Lopez finished just behind with a mark of 34.90 meters. Head coach David Lawrence Jr.'s deep freshman class continued to be on display in the Cardinal Classic as Mia Oggenfuss would participate in the high jump for her third straight week. Oggenfuss would tie her season best with a mark of 1.45 meters (4'9'') and finish in 3rd place.
