LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - On Thursday, April 15th, the Sonoma State track & field team headed down south to compete in the Cal State LA Twilight Open. Head coach
David Lawrence Jr. has now taken his squad to nine spring events as they come down the final stretch before the conference championships on May 5th. Several Seawolves recorded new season bests on the day but the highlight belonged to
Nia Arceneaux as she qualified for the CCAA Championships in the 100 meters. Out of 36 participants in the event, Arceneaux earned herself a top-10 finish with a time of 12.65 seconds.
With only two student-athletes competing in field events, the Seawolves would highlight the track events in participants in the 100 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 200 meters, 1500 meters and the 4x400 meter relay. Freshman cross country star
Alex Boyle recorded a new personal best in the 1500 meters as they recorded a time of 4:50.39 good for 3rd place! Boyle missed out on the top spot by just three seconds. SSU would record some of their best finishes of the day in the 1500 meters as Boyle earned a top-3 finish and fellow freshman
Sophie Rodriguez would follow in 4th place with a time of 5:02.81. Rodriguez would also earn an 11th place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:31.09 to round out her successful day.
Senior transfer
Amber Lanza would record a top-10 finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.78. Her mark would go down as a new personal best on the season. Freshmen
Katie Sheldon and
Sydney Lopes would represent SSU in the 400 meter hurdles. Sheldon would earn a 5th place finish as she was just over two seconds off the top spot with a time of 1:11.22.. Lopes would follow two spots back in 7th place with a time of 1:12.64.
Out of over 40 participants in the 200 meter dash,
Nia Arceneaux and
Makayla Bernadez would each place inside the top-15. Arceneaux would finish in 11th place with a time of 26.03 seconds. Bernadez would earn another solid finish in 14th place with a time of 26.10 seconds, good for a new personal best. Bernadez was fresh off of a career performance last week at the East Bay Invite where she earned two first place individual finishes and a first place team finish in the 4x400 relay.
Finally, the Seawolves would earn a quality 2nd place finish in the 4x400 meter relay to round out the day. Boyle, Bernadez, Lopes, and Arceneaux would make up the team as they earned a top-2 finish out of the 7 competing teams with a time of 4:07.94.
The SSU track & field team has two more events to conclude their spring campaign before the CCAA Championships start on May 5th. They resume competition today and tomorrow at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State. The Seawolves will then head to Fresno State on April 30th in their final spring event.
