ROHNERT PARK, CALIF. - On Thursday, March 9th, the 2022-23 D2CCA All-West Region teams were announced with none other than the conference Player of the Year,
Jaylen Wells, being named to the First Team, representing the program's first all-region selection since 2012. Wells's trophy case continues to grow as he became the first SSU D2CCA All-West Region First Team selection in the program's history after leading the Seawolves to their first CCAA Tournament appearance since 2017.
After falling in the semifinals of the conference tournament, Wells officially concluded his 2022-23 campaign averaging 22.4 points (1st in CCAA), 8.7 rebounds (t-1st in CCAA), 36.8 minutes (1st in CCAA), and finishing 4th in the conference shooting an efficient 52% from the field. Wells would lead his team in points, rebounds, steals, FG%, FT%, and minutes played as he became just the second player in program history to be named CCAA Player of the Year.
Wells's First Team All-Region selection makes him eligible for All-American status later this month as he could become just the second All-American in program history along with SSU Hall of Famer Vince Inglima (2005-06, DII Bulletin). He also becomes the first All-Region selection in program history since the 2011-12 season (Steven Pratt, NABC).
PROGRAM RECORDS:
Jaylen Wells put together one of the most dominant seasons in program history. He became the program's first 20-point scorer since 1990, finished first in single-season history in made free throws (174), second in FT% (86%), first in total minutes played (1,105), and second in points with 672, shy of the single-season record by just four points (Todd Blakely, 676).
Wells showcased his gifted athletic ability as well as his drastic improvement with his outside shooting, finishing with a career and team best 44% from three-point range. Wells also took home three conference Player of the Week awards this season, tying Hall of Famer J.T. Tipton for the most weekly awards in a single season.
The D2 CCA Player of the Year award and all-region teams are nominated and selected by members of the region's athletics communications staff.
The D2 CCA encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of high education. The D2 CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact NCAA Division II athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
The five members of the All-West Region First Team will now be placed on the national ballot for All-America consideration. The All-America teams will be released Sunday, March 19. The complete All-West region teams can be found
