Seawolves Stop Lumberjacks In Mid-Week Showdown

ARCATA, Calif- Keala Peterson and Ally Sather combined for 35 of the team's 58 kills and Lindsay Lytle scored a double-double with 27 assists and 14 digs, helping Sonoma State to a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) over Humboldt State on Wednesday night at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. The Seawolves, who remain at No. 5 in the official NCAA Division II West Region poll released today, have won four of their last five matches, improving to 14-8 overall and 11-7 in the CCAA.

Neither team led by more than three points in the opening frame, tying 10 times while the lead changed on three occasions. However, the Seawolves were able to pull away towards the end of the set to claim the 25-22 win, taking the 1-0 match lead. The second set was much of the same, but Sonoma State, after being tied at 7-7, pulled ahead to take a 19-14 advantage. Humboldt State closed the gap to 20-17, but the Seawolves eventually took a 2-0 match lead with the 25-20 win.

Humboldt State bounced back and made a statement, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead. Sonoma State chipped away at the lead, though, even tying the score at 20-20. The Lumberjacks held off the Seawolf rally and took the thred set by three points at 25-22.

The fourth set mirrored the first set in that each team stayed very close to each other -- neither team led by more than two points. The fourth frame, which amassed 16 tie scores and three lead changes, saw Humboldt State tie the score at 20 apiece before Sonoma State could regroup and pull out the four-set victory with a 25-22 win.

Peterson led the team with 18 kills and Sather added 17. Brooke Moore also smashed double-digit kills with 10 on the night, as the three accounted for 45 kills. Taylor Krenwinkel had 21 digs while Lytle and Peterson had 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

Humboldt State had a slightly better hitting efficiency -- .245 to Sonoma State's .234. Oceana Matsubu led all players with 20 kills with just two errors in 58 attacks.

Sonoma State will wrap up its 2010 road schedule with a pair of matches this weekend -- Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday. The Seawolves will then return home for a pair of games to wrap up the regular season. SSU is looking for its third straight NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament appearance. The top eight teams in the final regional poll will qualify for postseason play.
