Hull, Seawolves Blister Dominican In Tuesday Sweep

Kelsey Hull slammed a match-high 15 kills to the floor in Tuesday's victory.
BOX SCORE: Sonoma State 3, Dominican 0

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Kelsey Hull lit the ball on fire (figuratively speaking, of course) and repeatedly sent a flame through the Dominican defense, helping Sonoma State to a demolishing 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-11, 25-11) of the visiting Penguins on Tuesday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves run their win streak to six games, improving to 8-2 this season. Dominican remains winless at 0-9.

Hull hit at a sizzling .700 clip, leading all players with 15 kills. In fact, she had one less kill than the entire Dominican offense, which slammed only 16 kills to the hardwood. Hull erred just once in 20 attempts, hitting at the highest single-match percentage since former SSU student-athlete Rikki Buckshnis hit .722 (13k-0e-18a) in a sweep of Dominican on Aug. 29, 2009.

As a team, Sonoma State hit at its best efficiency of the season, sporting a .420 clip with 42 kills and just eight errors in 81 swings. Ally Sather connected for nine kills and Keala Peterson had seven. Devin Shaver came off the bench in the second frame to set a career-high 23 assists -- Hayley Ross passed out 15.

It was an all-around effort on defense, as nine of the 12 players who saw action on Tuesday, recorded at least one dig. Nicole Gragnola and Peterson led the way with eight digs apiece, combining for 16 of the Seawolves' 44 digs. The Penguins had just 28 digs in the match. Taylor Krenwinkel, the reigning CCAA Volleyball Player of the Week, recorded seven digs and is just four shy of the career digs record of 1,704. She also aced four serves while Ashley Robinson added three aces from the service line.

Right from the get-go, Sonoma State heated up, scoring the match's first five points. Dominican would claw its way back into the set, trailing by just one at 8-7. However, the Seawolves reeled off a 17-5 run and would grab the early 1-0 match lead. The Penguins would snatch their first lead of the match early in the second set, leading 3-2, but it was short-lived as Sonoma State sprinted to another large lead and the eventual 25-11 win. It was all Seawolves in the third, again jumping to a 5-0 lead and they never looked back, scoring six of the last seven points of the match to win 25-11.

Dominican was led by the six kills of Jessica Jones. The Sonoma State defense held the visitors to just a .053 hitting percentage -- it is the fifth time this season that the Seawolves have held their opponents under .100.

Sonoma State will resume its season-long five-match homestand when it re-enters CCAA play on Friday. The Seawolves will play host to Cal State Dominguez Hills, with the first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at The Wolves' Den.
