Ally Sather and
Keala Peterson combined for 26 of Sonoma State's 50 kills and the defense shut down the high-powered Cal State Monterey Offense, holding former National Player of the Week Rheann Fall to just five kills and a negative hitting percentage, en route to a dominating three-set victory over the No. 21 Otters on Saturday night. The Seawolves have now won three straight matches due to sweeps and snapped CSUMB's seven match win streak.
The Seawolves rise to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the CCAA while the Otters lose just their second match of the season, falling to 10-2 and 7-2 in conference play.
Sather led the way with 14 kills and a .321 hitting percantage and rejected two Otter attacks. Peterson capped off a huge weekend, slamming 33 kills in three matches this weekend, including 12 on Saturday night.
Devynne Johnson added eight kills in 11 attacks, erring on just two of them.
Lindsay Lytle was one assist shy of her season-high of 31, passing out 30.
Taylor Krenwinkel recorded 21 digs to lead all defenders.
In the first set, the Seawolves led from start to finish, but the set tied once. SSU ultimately took the opening set 25-19. The second set was much closer, as the Otters forced the Seawolves to extra points, but SSU scored two straight points to win 26-24.
The third set wasn't in doubt from the first serve. Sonoma State sprinted out to a 21-6 lead and eventually claimed the victory with the dominating 25-11 win.
SSU held the Otters to just a .101 hitting percentage with 26 kills and 16 errors in 99 swings. Cal State Monterey Bay had nine service aces and had a big night at the net, rejecting 14 attacks, including 12 assisted.
Sonoma State will hit the road next weekend to take on Cal State Dominguez Hils (Friday) and Cal State L.A. (Sunday), before returning home on Oct. 15 to face UC San Diego.
