SEASIDE, Calif- Backed by the 13 kills of
Keala Peterson and 11 by
Ally Sather, Sonoma State cruised to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-15, 25-23) of host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday evening at the Kelp Bed. The Seawolves have won three straight and five of their last six as they improve to 15-8 overall and 12-7 in CCAA play. The Otters fall to 11-8 in conference action (14-8 overall).
Neither team led by more than two points in the opening set until the Seawolves went on a eight-point run to take a commanding 18-11 lead. The Otters chipped away at the lead, though, coming to within three points at 21-18. Sonoma State countered with three straight points to force set point at 24-18. Both teams traded points and the Seawolves took the 1-0 match lead.
After a 6-6 tie in set two, Sonoma State blasted CSUMB by going on a 15-3 run to go up 21-9, eventually crusing to the 25-15 win. The Seawolves hit .250 in each of the first two sets on 29 kills, seven errors with 88 attacks.
Cal State Monterey Bay came out with a vengeance in set number three and held a 12-7 lead midway through the frame. However, the comeback kids of Sonoma State fought back to force an 18-18 tie. However, the Otters scored five of the next seven points to lead 23-20. Just as they did earlier, the Seawolves came right back, scoring the matches next five points to win the third set and sweep the match.
Peterson had double-digit kills for the ninth straight match and for the 12th time in the last 13 contests. She and Sather combined for 24 of the team's 41 kills, as
Brooke Moore chipped in with nine. The Seawolves hit. 206 for the match and aced five serves, three of which came from
Amanda Vanover.
Hayley Ross recorded her first collegiate double-double with 12 assists and 12 digs while adding a service ace.
Lindsay Lytle passed out a game-high 20 assists.
Taylor Krenwinkel again led all defenders with 21 digs.
Rheann Fall led all hitters with 18 kills, but had 10 errors in 53 swings.
Sonoma State, who has three matches remaining in the regular season, wrap up its road schedule on Saturday when the Seawolves visit San Francisco State. First serve from the Main Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
